Judeo-spanish Lyrics

Mas ariva y mas ariva,
la civdad de Vizirolu,
ahi havia un pexcadoro,
pexcando su proveria.

Vido venir tres en cavallo,
haziendo gran polveria.
Cercaron cerca del rio,
a la mar lo echarian.

Echo ganchos y gancheras,
por ver lo que les salia.
le salio bulten de oro,
hijo del rey parecia.

Piedra lleva 'n su garganta,
mas de mil okas venia.
Anillo lleva 'n su dedo,
cien prove rico s'hazia.

Cavezon lleva 'n su puerpo,
cavezon de sirma y perla.
El rey quito pregoneros,
al hijo suyo - quen viria?

Se bivo se lo traivan,
grande conde lo haria.
Si muerto se lo traia,
medio reinado le daria.

Esas palavras diziendo,
la romansa s'acavaria.
Si bivo se lo traiva,
grande conde lo haria.

The ballad reports of the mysterious assasination of Juan Borgia, Duque de Gandia, son of the pope Alejandro VI. The romance appears in an old publications of Timoneda in 1573, Mendaqo in 1588, or Juan Vicente Franco in 1607. Although the Sephardic texts are fragments, they are a vivid testimony of the ballad that was not conserved by the oral tradition on the Iberian peninsula. The lyrics is from the collection Menendez-Pidal by Armistead et.al.
