Hope, and Celbrations in the Jewish Tradition)
The lyrics to this song were written in the Vilna ghetto by
writer and partisan Shmerke Kaczerginski (1908-1954),
following the tragic death of his wife in April of 1943.
The song was first sung in the ghetto theater revue Di
Yogenish in Fas. Kaczerginski survived the war but died
in a plane crash in 1954. Abraham Brudno, one of vilna's
promising young musicians, composed the music for this
piece. Following hte liquidation of the ghetto in September
of 1943, Brudno was taken to the Kluga concentration camp in
Estonia where he died in 1944. |

Of course this song is based on Psalm XXIII
It has become quite famous in Italy (also with a Disco-remix!) after a Roberto Faenza's movie.."Jona che visse nel ventre della balena" (Jona who lived in the belly of the whale). The plot of the movie is based on the autobiographical novel "Childhood years" by the Dutch writer Jona Obersky. It has been the first time (after the case of HAVA NAGILA) that a Hebrew song has become really famous among the genral populatiion in Italy. Some neo-fascist antisemitical groups in Rome have used this song (changing the words) to mock the Jews during Soccer Games. Gam Gam is also the name of a Kosher Restaurant run by a Lubavitcher Comgregation in the old ex-ghetto of Venice. In the Faenza's movie Jewish children sang this song in a school in Amsterdam. The version of the movie has been sung by a French Jewish Cildren Choir.."Les Chivatim". |

Gebojrn in a sajdn hemdl This song is a parable on the vital value of the native Jiddish language. The silken shirt of the inherited mother tongue is like a second skin which should never be given away. The threat of loosing it arises mainly abroad where the danger of loosing ones linguistic identity is particularly imminent.

Judeo-spanish |
A favorite romance among the Sephardim that gave the group of singers
GERINELDO its name.
A princess invites Gerineldo, her father's page, to spend the night with her.
The king discovers them "as man and wife" and wonders what to do.
He reasons that if he slays his daughter her ghost will haunt him,
and that if he slays Gerineldo his kingdom may be lost.
So, departing from the romance tradition of heads severed for honour's sake,
he does the sensible thing and marries them each other.
- Possibly a romance of Aeginhard and the daughter of Charlemagne inspired this ballad. - The introductory lines are from Diego Pisador,
Libro de Musica de Vihuela, Salamanca 1552.
The lyrics is from the collection of Menendez-Pidal. |

SECOND CORRECTION:
Ongezolet - should be ongezolyet
S'iz a dor fun kyloy khaim - zenen keyn naronim!
-should be kulo khAYEV - zayt nit keyn naronim!
Oy, du tatenyu in himl, s'betn bney rakhnonim,
-should be ...bney rakhmonim,
moshekh/moshiekh - should be az moshiakh
I wasn't sure before and let it go the first time. I am coming back to this page to make the correction on this phrase. The term here should be "kulo khayev" not "kulo khaim" It means 'full of sin'. The belief in Judaism is that Moshiakh will come if everyone on earth will be sinners or everyone will be saintly - nothing in between.
There is a correct text at http://www.janfrerichs.de/lieder/liederbuch/texte/geule.html
Only one correction there - instead of 'tate in himl' Josh, who introduced this song to the klezmer revival' always sings it 'tatele in himl'. I believe that Adrienne, who learned it from Josh, sings it this way too.

Those interested in this song may also be interested in the texts

From Sam Weiss:
I had remembered this folksong as appearing in the Schack-
Cohen Yiddish Folk Songs collection, but
I could not find it in the copy that I had. On closer inspection I noticed that there is a
blanked-out entry for a song #22 in the table of contents, as well as in the song summaries
section. Since this copy is the 5th edition published in 1950, Im assuming that "Geyt a goy
in shenkl arayn" is the censored song. Abe Ellstein wrote an arrangement of the song in 1926.

After each of the three main sections of the Musafprayers on Rosh Hashanah, the shofar is sounded. This is followed by a prayer proclaiming that this day, Rosh Hashanah, commemorates the birth of the universe, and that on this day human beings stand before their Creator either as children or servants. This prayer asks God to relate to humanity with the mercy of a Father or to take note of the beseeching eyes of His servants and to respond with graciousness.
