The English translation of the title of the song book is "Songs for Shule and Home." The song book was printed in the United States in 1946. I first heard this song about 20 years ago from an elderly woman who had learned it as a small child in Lithuania. I heard about this song from my mother who learned it at the Peretz shule in Winnipeg in about 1930. I was thrilled to find it here!

Itsik Vitenberg (Itzik Wittenberg) glik Sh. Kaczerginsky Yiddish Itsik Wittenberg was the commander of the United Partisan Organization in Vilna during the World War II. He was betrayed to the Gestapo by Jacob Gens, head of the Jewish Council. The partisans managed to free him, but the Gestapo threatened massive retaliation if Wittenberg was not found. Wittenberg turned himself in, and committed suicide rather than risk being tortured into betraying his comrades. The music by Blanter was originally "The Partisan Zheleznyak"; Kaczerginsky, who wrote the words to this song, was another partisan leader.

"Kaleh" or "Maleh" sounds better than "kale" or "Male", which are quite confusing. I think "aunt" to be "mumeh", not "tante". As a matter of fact, I'd rather pronounce it "mimeh", as it used to be in Poland (the same for "gekimen")

If anyone can translate that line better please do. --------------------- Raqui is/was an aniseed based alcholic drink 01/02/03 N.B.: raqui ("raki", "rakiya" is the Arabic- Turkish word for brandy made of grapes, plums or other fruit. Aniseed brandy is called "mastika".
